Henry Edward (Harry) Foster (1872–1950)

Veteran trade union leader, Mr Harry Foster, died suddenly at Royal Melbourne hospital on Monday.

Mr Foster was treasurer of the Victorian ALP for many years. He was also associated with the Labor paper Tocsin, and later Labor Call, as secretary of the Industrial Printing and Publicity Company.

His union career went back to 1898, when he was appointed secretary of the Plumbers and Gasfitters' Society.

He held that post until 1941 and was Federal secretary from the inception of the Federal union in 1912 until 1942.

Mr Foster devoted the greater part of his life to service in the Trade Union Movement. Trades Hall flags were flown at half-mast in his honor this week.
