Harry Gould, 1946

L. [Llewellyn] Harry Gould, well known to communists throughout Australia, died on Wednesday, July 10, in a car accident. He was 75 years of age.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Harry came to Australia in 1929 as the economic crisis was beginning. He joined the Communist Party early in the 1930's and was to rise to positions of responsibility. He was elected to the central committee of the party and the political bureau. He worked on the editorial staff of the Workers Weekly and then on Tribune when it was established in 1939.

Harry took over responsibility for party education and was the driving force in the  very successful Marx School period at 695 George Street, Sydney in the 1940's. He was especially interested in marxist philosophy and read and lectured on this subject. It was at this time that he prepared the "Marxist Glossary".

Following a severe illness in the early 1950's Harry had to curtail his party activities and he returned to industry. He continued to show close interest in party theory and development.

In more recent years he prepared for publication materials from the writings of L.L. Sharkey. This publication has already been printed and Harry had just completed arrangements for its distribution at the time of his death.

Harry Gould is survived by his wife Diana and son Shaun. The national committee of the party and Tribune join in extending deepest sympathy to his family.
