Ardagh, Richard George (Dick) (1871–1931)

Mr. Richard George Ardagh, J.P., died at his home in Hardy street, Bayswater, on July 31. He was a native of Gippsland, Victoria, and 60 years of age. Almost from his youth he was associated with the mining industry and trade unionism. He came to Western Australia in 1895 and worked on the mines as engine driver and in other capacities. Later he was, for seven years, secretary of the Trades and Labour Council, and for a time he occupied the position of managing editor of the 'Westralian Worker.' He became a member of the Kalgoorlie Municipal Council in 1903, and from May 1912, to May 1924, was a member of the Legislative Council as a representative of the North-East Province. His kind disposition and high ideals endeared him to all. The respect with which Mr. Ardagh was held was demonstrated by the large number of floral tributes and the representative attendance at the funeral on August 3. The service was conducted by the Rev. Howse at the graveside and in the private chapel of Messrs. Prosser, Scott and Co., Ltd., prior to the cortege proceeding to the Church of England Cemetery Karrakatta.

The chief mourners were Mrs. Ardagh (widow), Les, Borris, Eric, Dick and Bruce (sons), Doris (Mrs. Wilkins), Jean, Bon and Ollie (daughters), Alice (Mrs. Burch, sister), Mr. Chris Luth (brother-in-law), Eric Tompkins (nephew), and E. Fisher (cousin). Pall-bearers were Messrs. Edgar Harris, M.L.C., Cornell, M.L.C. (representing Sir James Kirwin), Richardson, M.L.A., Macfarlane, M.L.C., Allen. McDonald (representing the Attorney-General), Ward (representing Bayswater Road Board), Church, E. A. Brown, Leonard, Dabble, McKeown, McCauley. Among those present were Messrs. R. McLeish, W. J.
