George Corbett Butler Ashton (1860-1918) stonemason, trade union leader 

Born: 26 October 1860 at Liverpool, Lancashire, England, son of George J. D. Ashton, tailor, and his wife Elizabeth, née Purbridge, dressmaker. Married: 8 March 1884 at Congregational Church, Manly, Mary Sarah (Minnie) Thomas (1861-1944); six daughters, two sons Died: 19 May 1918, Woollahra, NSW. 

Organising Secretary of Operative Stonemason’s Society with annual salary of £20.  Society had only 35 financial members when he joined, substantially increased membership during term of office. 1907-1918, General Secretary Local Government Employees Union, taking ‘active part in building up one of the most successful Labor combinations in the South Pacific’.
