Alexander George Barty (1903-1968) boilermaker, trade union leader 

Birth: 16 April 1903 at Newport, Victoria, son of David Melville Barty, Scottish-born machinist and woodworker, and Florence, née McGrath. Marriage: 27 December 1924 at Footscray Baptist Church in Victoria to Rubena Adele Allingham. They had one son and one daughter. Death: 30 November 1968 at Parkville, Victoria. Religion: Baptist. 

  • 1925-6 elected vice-president, Boilermakers’ Union, Melbourne branch; closely associated with its growth.
  • 1940-41 branch delegate to district committee.
  • 1943 elected branch president and delegate.
  • 1954 acting secretary, Melbourne branch.
  • 1945-1961 Federal councillor.
  • 1955-1963 elected Federal president Boilermakers’ Union. Delegate to Melbourne Trades and Labor Council, wages board and apprenticeship commission.
