George Roy Beardsworth (1888–1939)

Victim of a motor accident which occurred when he was driving executive members of the Hospital Employees' Federation to Ararat some days ago, the secretary of the union, Mr. Roy Beardsworth, died in St. Vincent's Hospital last Sunday.

When the accident happened near Melton Mr. Beardsworth suffered severe head injuries including a fractured skull.

He was taken to the Bacchus Marsh Hospital, where he remained in a critical state, later being removed to St Vincent's, where he underwent an operation.

Only 51 years of age, Mr. Beardsworth first entered the trade union movement as an organiser in the Storemen and Packers Union, and later was elected secretary of the Hospital Employees Union.

The late Mr. Beardsworth was a past president of the Victorian branch of the Australian Labor Party, past-president of the Trades Hall Council, and took a great interest in municipal politics, being elected mayor of Chelsea on two occasions.

He was a member of the Chelsea Council at the time of his death.

Mr. Beardsworth was president of the Trades Hall Salaried Officers' Association when he died, and at one time contested the electorates of Henty and Dandenong as the selected Labor candidate.

He was buried at the old Cheltenham Cemetery last Tuesday, a large number of Trades Hall and A.L.P. officials being present. Deceased leaves a widow and four children.

The pall-bearers were: Senator Keane, Messrs. F. Marzorini (Secretary of Labor), J. Hester, A. E. Monk (president of the Trades Hall Council), E. A. Foster (Mental Hygiene Department), T. Bourke (Hospital Employees' Federation), the Mayor of Chelsea (Cr. Titchener), and Cr. J. Loughnan (Richmond).
