The death took place in Wallsend Hospital last night of Mr. John Bower, who was for many years associated with the administration of the business of Wallsend and Plattsburg Cooperative Society, and had been a prominent figure in the friendly society movement. He was 78.
Before his retirement some years ago, Mr Bower was for a long period Secretary of Wallsend and Plattsburg Cooperative Society.
As an Oddfellow and a Forester, Mr.Bower had given much service in the interests of the friendly society movement. He was among the oldest members of Court Friendships, the Wallsend branch of the Ancient Order of Foresters and of the Miners' Home Lodge, the Wallsend branch of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows, He was a past officer in both orders.
The Wallsend Masonic Lodge (Lodge St James) has also lost one of it's oldest members.
Thirty-five years ago Mr. Bower occupied the presidency of the Northern Miners Federation. In an election in 1908 Mr. Peter Bowling defeated him for the post.
Mr. Bower had been a widower for a good many years and is survived by a son Mr George Bower, of Cessnock.
