Cecil Clive (Ben) Chaffey (1911-1965) postal mechanic, trade union leader 

Birth: 1911 at Inverell, New South Wales, son of native-born parents Octavius Chaffey (1869-1945), miner, and Rosa Martha, née Goodwin (1870-1924). Marriage: 1953 at North Sydney, NSW, to Nellie Phillips, née Young, late Mills, previously Jones (1899-1991). Death: 1 February 1965 in Bankstown District Hospital, NSW; usual residence Canary Road, Lakemba. Religion: Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. 

  • 1927 joined Postmaster General’s Department as a mechanic-in-training. Became a member of Australian Postal Electricians’ Union — known from 1943 as the Postal Telecommunications Technicians’ Association (Australia) (PTTAA).
  • 1947 elected full-time secretary of the NSW branch and federal councillor of the PTTAA. Re-elected continuously to both positions from 1948 to 1960.
  • Elected federal committeeman of PTTAA, 1950-57. Elected federal president from 1958 to 1965, arbitration officer 1953, 1956-60.
  • Branch delegate to NSW Trades and Labor Council 1958-60 and delegate to Australian Labor Party conference 1958-60.
  • Cause of death: cerebral thrombosis, arteriosclerosis, hypertension and chronic nephritis.
