Ebenezer Cheary (1879–1963)

This entry is from Obituaries Australia

The death occurred on Friday of Mr Ebenezer Cheary, a former secretary-treasurer of the SA branch of the Printing Industry Employes’ Union and foreman of the day Hansard staff of the SA Parliament.

He was 83.

Mr Cheary, as a four-year-old, arrived in SA with his parents in the sailing ship Glamis in June, 1883.

Mr Cheary joined the executive of the Printing Industry Employes’ Union, following the death of Mr. W. C. Melbourne, in 1924.

He resigned from the office of secretary in 1947.

Among his other activities he was a general-secretary of the SA Literary Societies’ Union, vice-president and life member of St Andrew’s Literary Society, president of the WEA, and president of the Goodwood District Recreation Ground Association.

Mr Cheary was Federal president of the PIEU for two years, a vice-president for 14 years, a member of the Apprentice Advisory Board for the Printing Trade and an assessor in the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme.

His associations with the ALP included membership of the ALP Council and United Trades and Labor Council, and chairmanship of the Adelaide Co-operative Society.

After his second wife’s death last year he left the Goodwood district and went to live with his son at Bridgewater.

He is survived by three daughters and a son.
