Joseph James Crowe (1868-1960) coppersmith and trade union official 

Birth: 10 July 1868 at Lefevre Peninsular, South Australia, son of Henry Crowe (1836-1904), a seaman’s runner, born in London, England, and native-born Harriet, née Barnes (1842-1878). Marriage: 18 July 1889 at bride’s father’s residence, Alberton, SA, to native-born Amelia Smith (1866-1919). They had two daughters and three sons. Death: 14 August 1960 at Woodville, South Australia; usual residence Dundas Street, Rosewater. 

  • Joined Port Adelaide branch of the Amalgamated Engineering Union in 1890 and was appointed check book keeper. Branch secretary from 1896 to 1944, often assuming dual duties of secretary and organiser, as was then common.
  • Participated in 1896 Kilkenny strike and many landmark events.
  • In 1956 resumed position for a further two years, such that he was branch secretary for 50 years, branch officer for 68 years. Never sought higher office in union.
  • Was an officer of the Northern Star Tent, No 1, Albert District, of the Independent Order of Rechabites (a Friendly Society).
  • Cause of death: bronchopneumonia, cerebral haemorrhage and hypertension.
