Charles Davis, n.d.

Charles Leonard Davis (1884-1959) labourer, trade union official, mayor and politician 

Birth: 14 February 1884 at Kilkenny, South Australia, son of native-born parents David Davies (1856-1940), butcher, and Hanna Maria (Annie), née Herbert (1854-1946). Marriage: 1 August 1906 at Marysville, Port Pirie, SA, to Ethel Mary Wade (1884-1966). They had one son. Death: 27 January 1959 at Port Pirie, SA. 

• Educated at Port Pirie State School. Labourer and organiser, Australian Workers’ Union in 1924 and State president from 1943 to 1954. President, Port Pirie Trades and Labor Council. Member of the Australian Labor Party.
• Contested elections for Northern District in the SA Legislative Council in 1938 and seat of Grey in the House of Representatives in 1940. Mayor of Port Pirie from 1949 to 1957.
• Elected ALP member of the SA House of Assembly for Port Pirie on 19 October 1946. Held the seat until his death.
