Walter Thomas Padgen (1882-1955) 

Born: 21 March 1882 Woolwich, England. Son of John, compositor and Emma Eliza Holder. Married: Margaret Chaytor, 1922. Died: 8 May 1955 Rydalmere

  • At early age began work in laboratory of the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, England;
  • Arrived in NSW c.1908; Employed by Cyde Engineering Works;
  • Joined Railway Dept. as machinist in 1910; Dismissed as a result of activities in 1917 strike, reinstated in 1922, sub-foreman, Eveleigh Workshops; Redfern 1927-44; JP 1915; Member Amalgamated Engineering Union, Pres. Sydney District Committee, Trustee Commonwealth council;
  • Joined Labor Party 1908, Member Central Executive 1924-28; Alderman Randwick 1941-48; Mayor 1948; Member Legislative Council 1946-55;
  • Helped found Randwick branch of Torchbearers for Legacy and Randwick Musical Society.
